Chapter 13 - The Broken Circle

Lucas looked down at the tiny creature resting against his ribs. Over the past twelve hours, this dog had become more than just a pet; he was a bridge across a chasm of years, regrets, and unspoken apologies. In Pip’s eyes, Lucas saw Sarah’s relentless stubbornness, her laughter, and the fragile hope that had brought him to the adoption center in the first place.
He looked at Thomas. The old man looked utterly defeated, sitting on the metal bumper of the truck, his bandaged hands resting limp on his knees. Thomas had lost his daughter, his home was damaged, and now he believed he was about to lose the final thread tying him to Sarah's memory.
""He's your dog, Lucas,"" Thomas said softly, not looking up. ""You're her brother. You carry her blood. She left Chicago because she couldn't face you after our mother died, but she never stopped loving you. She talked about you all the time. She always said you were the one who taught her how to stand her ground.""
Lucas swallowed the hard lump in his throat. He reached into his pocket and pulled out the teardrop silver pendant, holding it up so the three carved notches caught the grey morning light.
""She gave you the pendant?"" Thomas asked, surprised.
""No,"" Lucas said. ""My father gave it to my mother when they married. Sarah took it the day she left Chicago. But two years ago, it arrived in my mailbox in an unmarked envelope with no return address. Just a note that said: 'Keep it safe until I come home.'""
Lucas leaned forward and placed the silver pendant into Thomas’s rough, scarred palm, closing the old man’s fingers around it.
""She wanted you to have a family, Thomas,"" Lucas said, his voice thick with emotion. ""And she wanted this little guy to be loved. But look at him.""
Lucas shifted the blanket. Pip immediately stood up, padded across the space between them on the truck bed, and hopped onto Thomas's lap, curling directly into the hollow of his arm, resting his chin on Thomas's bandaged wrist.
""He chose you first, Thomas,"" Lucas said with a faint smile. ""Out on that ridge. But he brought us together for a reason.""

Thomas bowed his head, a single sob breaking from his chest as his fingers stroked the soft fawn fur. ""I can't take care of Sarah's acreage alone, Lucas. The flood ruined the fencing. The outbuildings are flooded.""
Lucas stood up, taking a deep breath of the crisp morning air. ""Who said anything about doing it alone?""
