Chapter 1 - The Shattered Gala

The opulent ballroom of the St. Regis hotel buzzed with the muted laughter of high society. Underneath crystal chandeliers that cast diamonds of light across polished marble, Eleanor Vance sat like royalty, her champagne sequined gown shimmering with every practiced breath. Across the table, her husband, Julian Vance, was mid-sentence, discussing an offshore acquisition, when the room’s ambient hum died away.

Eleanor followed the collective gaze of the startled guests. Pushing through heavy velvet draperies, a ragged boy—no older than eight—stood barefoot against the pristine floor. His face was streaked with grime and soot, his oversized cotton shirt torn at the shoulder. He looked like an apparition plucked from a nightmare, yet his hazel eyes were steady, fixed solely on Eleanor.

Before security could intervene, the boy marched toward the head table. Every step left a faint smudge of dust on the ivory runner. He stopped just inches from Eleanor, extended a small, trembling hand, and let a tarnished brass chain spill from his fingers. Suspended at the end was an antique pocket watch.

""I think this might be yours,"" the boy whispered, his voice brittle and cracked.

Eleanor froze. Her breath caught in her throat. Her manicured hands trembled violently as she reached out, taking the cool metal into her palms. Her thumb caught the worn release latch. The pocket watch sprang open. Inside lay an aged, hand-tinted photograph: a younger Eleanor, smiling radiantly, cradling a newborn marked with a faint, crescent-shaped birthmark on his collarbone.

A solitary tear broke free, carving a clean line down her powdered cheek. Eight years of grief, eight years of being told her infant son had drowned in the coastal storm of Maine, crashed down in a single instant.

""Where did you get this?"" Eleanor choked out.

""My mommy,"" the boy answered softly.

Julian rose abruptly, his face pale and furious, snapping at the approaching security guards to remove the vagrant. But as the guard grabbed the child’s shoulder, the collar of the boy's torn shirt slipped aside, exposing a faint, pale crescent scar beneath his collarbone. Eleanor’s scream pierced the hall as the boy suddenly collapsed into the guard's arms, unconscious.
