Chapter 14 - The Final Confession

Arthur Sterling reached for his briefcase, but Uncle Caleb stepped forward, pinning the lawyer's good shoulder down into his chair with a massive, weathered hand. ""Sit still, counselor,"" Caleb growled. ""The lady is speaking.""

The board members stared at Liam. The resemblance was undeniable; the boy possessed the piercing hazel eyes of the Vance family patriarch and the exact aristocratic features of Eleanor’s lineage.

""Photographs and old bracelets prove nothing in a court of law!"" Julian shouted, his composure shattering entirely. ""I am the chief executive! I run this firm!""

""Not anymore,"" Sarah said smoothly. She slid a portable biometric fingerprint scanner across the glass tabletop toward Liam. ""When Leopold was born, his neonatal foot and palm prints were registered with the Massachusetts State Medical Archive, sealed under the original Vance Trust provisions. Only two people could unseal it: Eleanor, or the heir himself upon discovery.""

Liam looked up at Eleanor, who gave him an encouraging, loving nod. He placed his small, steady right palm flat against the illuminated blue scanner.

The machine whirred softly. On the massive projection screen at the front of the boardroom, a digital comparison began. Neon lines mapped the ridge patterns, matching them against the eight-year-old high-resolution archive record.

A single chime echoed through the room. The screen flashed bright green: IDENTITY CONFIRMED: LEOPOLD VANCE. STATUS: LEGAL HEIR.

The board members gasped, several immediately standing up in outrage and disbelief.

""Julian... what have you done?"" the senior trustee asked, his voice shaking with horror.

Cornered, stripped of his lies, and facing total ruin, Julian’s eyes turned wild. He lunged forward, not toward the papers, but toward Eleanor's throat. ""I built this empire! I won't let an eight-year-old bastard take it from me!""

Before Julian could reach her, two plainclothes federal agents rushed through the side entrance, tackling Julian to the carpet with crushing force. Handcuffs clicked shut around his wrists with cold finality.

Pinned to the floor, Julian glared up at Eleanor, venom dripping from his lips. ""You think you’ve won? The syndicate holds debts against every asset you have! You’ll be broke within a month!""

Eleanor looked down at the man she had loved for a decade, feeling nothing but a profound, cleansing pity.

""I don't care about the money, Julian,"" she said softly. ""I have my son.""

As Julian and Arthur were dragged out of the boardroom in disgrace, Liam reached out and took Eleanor’s hand. His grip was tight, warm, and real.

""Mommy?"" Liam asked quietly. ""Can we go home now?""

Eleanor knelt, embracing him with all the love she had saved across eight agonizing years. ""Yes, my love. We're going home.""
