Chapter 11 - The Outlaw Fleet

The fishing trawler, dubbed The Sea Wraith, plunged through five-foot swells as the Atlantic coastline faded into a gray blur of rain. In the cramped, diesel-fumed cabin, Clara worked quickly with Caleb's first-aid kit, stitching Eleanor’s shoulder with sterile nylon thread. Eleanor bit down on a piece of clean leather, tears streaming silently down her pale cheeks until the final knot was tied.
Liam sat in the corner, clutching a mug of hot broth Caleb had warmed on the galley stove. He never let his eyes leave Eleanor, terrified that looking away might make her vanish again.
""Drink your soup, little sailor,"" Caleb said gently, adjusting the helm. ""You've got your mother's stubborn eyes. I'd recognize that look anywhere.""
""Uncle Caleb,"" Eleanor said, wiping sweat from her brow as Clara secured a tight bandage around her torso. ""Julian has the harbor police and the Coast Guard monitoring every commercial dock from Portland to Boston Harbor. If we approach any public pier, they will seize Liam under the pretext of protective custody.""
""They own the big docks, Ellie, but they don't own the salt,"" Caleb replied with a low, gravelly chuckle. He flipped a switch on the marine radio, setting the frequency to an unmonitored VHF band. He tapped the microphone three times, paused, and spoke: ""Gull to the Roost. I'm hauling precious cargo with sharks on my tail. Requesting a clean lane into South Boston.""
Static crackled over the speaker. For a long, tense minute, there was nothing. Then, a gruff voice answered: ""Understood, Gull. The fleet is launching. We’ll meet you at the three-mile marker.""
Eleanor looked at her uncle in surprise. ""Who was that?""
""Your father spent forty years funding retirement pensions and healthcare for every independent lobsterman and docker in Massachusetts, Eleanor,"" Caleb said, looking back at her. ""Julian thought he bought the city with corporate bribes. But the men who actually work the water don't forget a real Vance.""
An hour later, the radar screen blipped repeatedly. Through the dense sea mist, silhouettes began to emerge—not Coast Guard cutters, but dozens of commercial fishing boats, trawlers, and crabbers, fanning out into an impenetrable escort formation around The Sea Wraith.

Just then, the shrill siren of a military-grade patrol vessel pierced the air. A cutter emerged from the gloom, its loudspeaker blaring: Attention vessel The Sea Wraith. Cut your engines immediately and prepare to be boarded!
The escort fleet did not scatter. Instead, twenty massive steel-hulled fishing boats tightened their formation, creating an unbreakable floating wall between Caleb’s trawler and the government cutter.
