Chapter 13 - The Vault of Judgement

The top floor of the State Financial Center was an ivory tower of tinted glass and polished chrome, looking down upon the historic streets of Boston. Inside the Grand Boardroom of Vance Holdings, Julian Vance sat at the head of a mahogany table, looking composed in a fresh charcoal suit, though dark circles shadowed his eyes.
Around the table sat twelve members of the Vance Trust Advisory Board, alongside Arthur Sterling, who wore an arm sling hidden beneath his tailored overcoat.
""Gentlemen,"" Arthur began, clearing his throat and shuffling a stack of legal documents. ""Given the tragic events of this morning, and the coastal discovery of Mrs. Vance’s abandoned vehicle following her violent mental break, we must execute the conservatorship clause immediately to prevent a disastrous run on the company’s stocks.""
A distinguished elderly board member frowned. ""Arthur, we have received no official confirmation of Eleanor’s death from the medical examiner. Rushing a fifty-billion-dollar trust transfer seems reckless.""
""Reckless?"" Julian interjected, his voice dripping with rehearsed grief. ""My wife suffered a total psychological collapse. She was manipulated by Clara, who has a documented history of severe delusion. If we do not stabilize the trust today, thousands of jobs will be lost. As the sole surviving head of the Vance lineage, it is my painful duty to take the helm.""
""Your duty, Julian?""
The heavy double doors of the boardroom burst open with a resounding bang.
Every head turned in stunned disbelief. Eleanor walked in, her head held high, wearing a clean, dark suit provided by Sarah that concealed the thick bandage over her shoulder. Flanking her were Clara and Sarah Jenkins, while Uncle Caleb stood broad-shouldered at the threshold, blocking the exit.
Walking beside Eleanor, dressed in a neat navy sweater, was Liam.
Julian sprang to his feet, knocking his leather chair backward. ""Security! Get this woman out of here! She’s mentally unstable and dangerous!""
""Security has been relieved by the State Attorney General’s Special Investigations Unit, Julian,"" Sarah Jenkins declared, stepping forward and placing a federal warrant on the table. ""And they are currently listening to every word.""
Eleanor walked straight to the head of the table, stopping three feet from her husband. The boardroom fell into a silence so profound that the hum of the air conditioning sounded like a roar.
""You told this board our son drowned,"" Eleanor said, her voice ringing clear and steady through the room. ""You told me the sea took him.""
""This is a pathetic charade,"" Julian sneered, though sweat was beading along his hairline. ""You picked up a street urchin to save your pride.""
""Look at him, Julian,"" Eleanor demanded.

She gently pulled Liam forward, lifting the small brass pocket watch and placing it on the polished mahogany table. Liam reached into his pocket and placed beside it a small, yellowed infant hospital bracelet, preserved for eight years in Clara’s hidden journal.
""This is Leopold Vance,"" Eleanor declared to the board. ""And he is here to claim his name.""
