Chapter 8 - The Price of Silence

Julian’s clothes were pristine, completely untouched by the mud and rain, contrasting sickeningly with the desperate family before him. Two armed operatives flanked him, their laser sights painting red dots across Eleanor's chest and Liam’s trembling frame.
""Julian,"" Eleanor said, keeping her voice level despite the terror turning her blood to ice. ""He’s your son. You held him the day he was born. You wept when you held him.""
Julian’s jaw twitched, a fleeting flicker of human emotion surfacing before cold calculation took over. ""He was my son, yes. But my father’s will was written by an old fool. The Vance empire was bequeathed not to me, but directly to my firstborn male heir upon reaching adulthood, with an independent trust until then. If Leo lived, I was merely a caretaker with an allowance. If he died before adulthood without siblings, the entire enterprise reverted to me unconditionally.""
""You tried to murder an infant for money?"" Clara screamed, lunging forward, but the butt of a guard’s rifle caught her across the cheek, dropping her to the damp boards.
""I didn't murder him,"" Julian countered sharply, his voice defensive. ""I couldn't bring myself to do that. I paid the smuggler to take him across the border to an orphanage in Quebec. But you, Clara... you interfered. You stole him from the drop-off point and ruined everything.""
""He was sick, Julian! He almost died of pneumonia because of you!"" Clara spat blood onto the floorboards.
""And now he returns, ruining eight years of financial restructuring,"" Julian said, his eyes hardening as he leveled the gun squarely at Liam. ""Sterling’s investors are already calling in their loans because of the gala scandal. If the boy lives, the trust activates immediately, forensic accountants examine the books, and I spend the rest of my life in federal prison for embezzling the trust.""
""Take the money, Julian,"" Eleanor pleaded, stepping forward to shield the child with her own body. ""Take everything. I will sign whatever Arthur drafts. We will vanish. To Europe, to South America. No one will ever know.""
Julian stared at her, a bitter smile touching his lips. ""You always were naive, Eleanor. Dead boys don't sign affidavits. Neither do runaway wives.""
He raised the pistol, taking slow, deliberate aim.

Suddenly, Liam pushed past Eleanor’s legs. In his tiny, dirt-smudged hand, he raised the antique pocket watch, aiming the mirror-like inner casing directly at the open doorway behind Julian. The morning sun broke through the clouds, reflecting a blinding beam of light straight into Julian's eyes.
Julian blinked, momentarily blinded. In that split second, the loud blast of a foghorn tore through the silence of the marsh.
