Chapter 2 - Whispers in the ICU

The steady, synthetic beep of the heart monitor was the only sound grounding Eleanor in reality. The boy lay engulfed by the clinical white sheets of St. Jude’s pediatric intensive care unit. His skin was feverish, breathing shallow and labored. Dr. Marcus, Eleanor’s trusted family physician, quietly stepped into the dim room, holding a clipboard against his chest.
""He's severely dehydrated, malnourished, and suffering from an advanced respiratory infection,"" Marcus whispered, keeping his voice below the hum of the machines. ""We have him on broad-spectrum antibiotics, Eleanor, but his immune system is exhausted.""
""His name,"" Eleanor murmured, sitting beside the bed, holding the boy’s frail, cold hand. ""Did he say anything before he passed out?""
""Only nonsense syllables,"" Marcus said, hesitating. ""And... one word, repeated several times: 'Cranston'.""
Eleanor’s pulse spiked. Cranston was not a person; it was the name of the private psychiatric clinic where her sister, Clara, had been placed following the storm that took Eleanor’s baby. Clara had suffered a complete breakdown, claiming she had saved the infant from the waves before losing consciousness herself. The family had dismissed her ravings as psychotic grief.
Suddenly, the door swung open. Julian entered, shadows under his eyes, followed closely by Arthur Sterling, the family’s senior attorney. Julian’s demeanor was tense, his jaw tightly clenched.
""Eleanor, this circus ends now,"" Julian said, gesturing toward the boy. ""The press is swarming outside the hospital. Tabloids are already running headlines about an illegitimate heir crashing our charity dinner. We must transfer him to a public facility anonymously.""
""He has my son's birthmark, Julian!"" Eleanor stood, her voice vibrating with maternal fury. ""He carried my locket—the one that vanished from my nursery safe the night Leo disappeared!""
""A coincidence. A con artist using an orphan to blackmail us,"" Julian snapped, though his eyes darted toward the monitor. ""Arthur is preparing an NDA for the staff.""
Behind them, the boy stirred. A weak cough escaped his dry lips. Eleanor rushed back to the bedside. The boy's eyes fluttered open, glassy with fever.

""Mommy said..."" the child rasped, looking past Eleanor directly at Julian. ""She said the man with the gold signet ring told her to hide me forever.""
Eleanor glanced down. On Julian’s right hand, the Vance family crest was carved in solid, gleaming gold.
