Chapter 11 - The Counter-Offensive

Dawn broke over the Hudson Valley in cold, slate-gray hues. By 7:00 AM, the digital front page of the Herald went live with an earth-shattering headline: THE STERLING EXPERIMENTS: INSIDE THE ILLICIT PEDIATRIC TRIALS OF THE VANGUARD FOUNDATION.

The impact was instantaneous and violent. Vanguard Group stock plunged thirty percent in pre-market trading. TV news vans began gathering outside the Manhattan penthouse, while federal regulators executed an emergency freeze on the Beacon research facility.

Inside the cottage, the tension did not dissipate; it crystallized into physical danger.

"They're tracking the vehicle," Marcus announced, bursting through the basement stairs. "A black town car just turned onto the county road two miles back. They didn't come with police, Julian. They came with Arthur’s retainers."

Jonathan immediately moved toward a steel gun cabinet in the corner, pulling out a heavy hunting rifle. "They won't risk a public scandal here. They want Clara back in a controlled facility before the FBI secures a material witness warrant."

"No guns," Clara said, pushing herself up on the bed. Her voice was firm, commanding the room despite her physical frailty. "No more violence. If this ends in a shootout in the woods, Arthur will spin it as a tragedy caused by a deranged family dispute. We need witnesses. We need the light."

Julian looked at his wife, seeing for the first time the formidable moral courage that had drawn him to her when she was just an unassuming public school art teacher. She had never belonged in the marble cages of Park Avenue, not because she was beneath them, but because her humanity was too vast to fit inside their hollow rituals.

"Marcus," Julian commanded. "Live-stream every camera feed on our phones to the press desk. Open the front doors. We meet them in the yard."
