Chapter 5 - The Descent Through Shadow

The service elevator moved down in deafening mechanical silence. Clara leaned heavily against Julian’s side, her breathing shallow as sharp Braxton Hicks contractions tightened across her abdomen.

"Breathe, Clara. Just breathe," Julian whispered, keeping his arm locked securely around her waist. His other hand held his phone, frantically dialing his personal driver—the only staff member whose loyalty was untainted by the family payroll. "Marcus, bring the SUV to the subterranean loading dock. Do not use the main garage. Now."

"Julian," Clara murmured, resting her temple against his chest. "Jonathan is waiting at the safe house off Route 9. He has the raw lab journals. If we don't secure them, your father’s legal team will burn the entire archive."

"We're getting you to a public hospital first," Julian insisted, his jaw set grimly. "Presbyterian. Mount Sinai. Anywhere with state oversight."

"No," Clara insisted, her fingers clutching his lapel. "Your father's influence reaches every board room in Manhattan. The moment my name enters an admission database, Arthur’s attorneys will file an emergency psychiatric conservatorship. They’ll claim I'm a danger to the unborn child. You know how the courts work here, Julian. Money moves faster than justice."

The elevator dinged softly, doors sliding open into the cold, concrete expanse of the subterranean delivery bay. The smell of exhaust and industrial detergent hung in the damp air.

Twenty yards away, the headlights of a black SUV flashed twice. Marcus was waiting.

As they took their first steps across the concrete, the heavy steel security doors on the far wall slammed open. Arthur's private head of security, a hulking man named Brennan, stepped into the light, accompanied by two armed guards.

"Mr. Sterling," Brennan called out, his tone neutral and professional. "Your father requested that you leave Mrs. Sterling in our care. Please step aside."
