Chapter 2 - The Architecture of Collusion

Silence settled heavily into the room, thick enough to suffocate. Julian looked between the blue slip in Clara’s hand and his mother’s face. He knew his mother's tells: the imperceptible twitch of her left eyelid, the slight adjustment of her diamond engagement ring when cornered. Both were happening now.
"Julian," Eleanor said, stepping toward him with smooth, measured grace. "Do not let this unravel your father’s foundation. The Vanguard Foundation is finalizing the hospital wing tonight. If Clara is seen in this state—if these absurd delusions leak to the press—"
"Delusions?" Julian barked. He stood up abruptly, his tall frame suddenly towering over the bed. He pointed down at Clara’s bandaged shins, where dried blood still stained the edges of the medical gauze. "She is bleeding in our bedroom! Look at her legs! Did she throw herself into the ravine, Eleanor?"
"I don't know what she did!" Eleanor snapped, her aristocratic veneer finally slipping, exposing a razor-sharp edge. "I only know that this family does not air its grievances in front of the world. Arthur, call security. Have Dr. Stern come upstairs through the service elevator."
"No," Clara said evenly. She swung her legs over the side of the mattress. The movement sent a sharp spasm of pain up her bruised calves, but she didn't flinch. She planted her bare feet squarely onto the hardwood. "No more private doctors. No more unmarked sedatives in my evening tea."
Julian stared down at the blue carbon sheet Clara held. He took it from her fingers, his hands unsteady. In the faint lamplight, he recognized the medical cipher and the embossed seal of the Vance Memorial Trust—an entity that had supposedly been dissolved after his childhood mentor, Dr. Jonathan Vance, was disgraced and presumed dead following an illegal pharmaceutical trial.
"Jonathan..." Julian murmured, reading the handwritten dosage notes. "He was my godfather, Eleanor. You told me he took his own life after the clinical trials failed."

"He was a criminal, Julian," Eleanor hissed, crossing her arms tightly over her chest. "He compromised our family name. Your father spent millions keeping our reputation intact."
"And keeping him locked away in a private clinic in upstate New York?" Clara interjected softly. "Because that’s where they took me tonight, Julian. They didn't take me to Presbyterian. They took me to the facility in Beacon."
