Chapter 4 - The Shattered Threshold

The master suite doors swung open, revealing two men in plain dark suits. They stood respectfully in the archway, eyes fixed forward, awaiting instructions from Arthur.
"Escort Mrs. Sterling to the private wing downstairs," Arthur commanded smoothly. "She requires immediate sedation and monitoring."
"Touch her, and I will tear this company down to the bedrock," Julian said.
The threat hung in the air, sudden and lethal. Julian had moved in front of the bed, placing his broad shoulders directly between the security team and Clara. His tuxedo cuffs were unbuttoned now, his fists clenched.
Eleanor gasped. "Julian! Have you completely lost your mind? She has poisoned your thoughts!"
"She is carrying my daughter!" Julian roared, the veneer of high-society decorum completely disintegrating. "And for the last three months, every time I asked why she was losing weight, why she was dizzy, why she had tremors, you told me it was morning sickness! You smiled across the Sunday brunch table and told me to be patient!"
Julian turned back to Clara, kneeling once more on the rug. His hands were gentle as he reached out and touched her bare, scraped ankles. The cold detachment that had defined his corporate climb melted away, replaced by an agonizing recognition of his own complicity. He had seen the signs—the exhaustion in her smile, the way she flinched when the house nurse drew her blood—and he had chosen comfort over scrutiny.
"Can you stand?" he asked her, his voice breaking.
Clara nodded slowly. "With you, I can."

"Julian, if you walk out that door with her," Arthur warned, his voice turning icy and thin, "you forfeit every share, every trust fund, and every institutional alliance we have built for you. You will be an outcast before dawn."
Julian stood up, wrapping his heavy tuxedo jacket around Clara’s shivering shoulders. "Then watch me starve."
