Chapter 12 - The Confrontation on Gravel

The black town car came to a slow, deliberate halt on the wet gravel driveway. Two men stepped out, followed by a third figure from the rear seat.

It wasn't a mercenary. It was Arthur Sterling himself.

The patriarch looked older in the gray morning mist, his bespoke cashmere overcoat buttoned high against the chill. He walked with a heavy cane he rarely used in public, his silver hair dampened by the drizzle. Behind him stood Brennan, his right eye swollen and dark from the struggle in the underground garage.

Julian stepped out onto the porch, flanked by Clara, who leaned against his shoulder wrapped in a coarse wool blanket. Jonathan stood just behind the screen door, silent, an apparition from Arthur’s buried past.

"Julian," Arthur said, stopping ten feet from the porch stairs. "Come home. End this public humiliation."

"It's over, Father," Julian said, his voice carrying clearly across the quiet clearing. "The federal marshals have already entered the Beacon facility. Jonathan’s original journals are in the hands of the Department of Justice."

Arthur didn't flinch. He looked past Julian, his cold blue eyes locking onto Jonathan Vance through the wire mesh of the screen door.

"You always were a sentimental fool, Jonathan," Arthur remarked, as though discussing a mediocre vintage of wine. "You thought science belonged to the people. Science belongs to those who fund it."

"And children?" Clara spoke up, her voice ringing out like a silver bell in the damp morning air. "Who do they belong to, Arthur? Do they belong to your portfolio?"

Arthur turned his gaze to Clara, his expression shifting from cold authority to venomous disgust. "You had a simple role, Clara. You were offered wealth, security, and a life your family couldn't have dreamed of in ten generations. All you had to do was obey."

"I am not your property," Clara said quietly. "And neither is your granddaughter."
