Chapter 14 - The Quiet Room

Forty-eight hours later, the white walls of Westchester General Hospital offered a silence of an entirely different nature.

There were no marble floors, no private elevators, and no armed guards at the entrance. In their place were nurses with tired smiles, the clean scent of antiseptic, and the gentle hum of vital-sign monitors that belonged to the public trust.

Clara lay in a recovery room, her hair freshly washed, the dark circles under her eyes finally beginning to soften into peaceful fatigue. In the clear plastic bassinet beside her bed lay a baby girl, wrapped in a simple, hospital-issued flannel blanket patterned with tiny pink and blue footprints.

She had arrived three weeks early, small but fierce, her lungs clearing with a sharp, indignant cry that had filled the delivery room with undeniable life.

Julian sat in a vinyl armchair pulled flush against the bed. He had not changed his shirt in two days, his jaw was covered in thick stubble, and his billionaire’s swagger was entirely gone. He looked like an ordinary man who had walked through a fire and emerged stripped to his bare humanity.

He held the baby's tiny hand, her miniature fingers wrapped securely around his forefinger.

"What should we name her?" Julian asked softly, his eyes shining with unshed tears.

Clara smiled, her hand resting over his. "Maya. It means water. It means something that cannot be owned, something that finds its own way through the stone."

Julian bowed his head, kissing the baby’s tiny, warm knuckles. "Maya Sterling."

May you like

"Just Maya," Clara corrected gently.

Julian looked up, paused, and then nodded with profound relief. "Just Maya."
