Chapter 10 - The Secret in the Soil

The sirens grew deafening, red and blue strobe lights painting the frosted glass of the foyer doors in violent hues. Ross was curled into a fetal position against the wall, murmuring incoherent legal defenses to himself.

Walter looked up at the vaulted ceiling, his shoulders sagging, shedding the rigid military posture he had maintained for half a century.

"She was my sister's daughter," Walter whispered, his voice trembling with a horrific, long-buried truth. "My niece."

The foyer fell into an unnatural hush, louder than the approaching police sirens. Clara gasped, taking half a step back as if struck.

"When the leak occurred thirty years ago," Walter continued, his voice breaking into a dry, hollow rattle, "your father gave me a choice, Julian. Remain silent, take the hush money, and secure a life of luxury as the Vance family steward... or speak up, be destroyed by their legal team, and watch my family starve in the gutter."

Tears, thick and bitter, finally breached Walter’s stony eyes.

"I chose the silver. I chose the uniform. And when Evelyn fell sick, I told myself it was an act of God. I told myself that wealth was the only armor against this cruel world. I destroyed my own soul to keep this family grand... and now, you throw it away for a confession?"

Julian looked at the old man, feeling no triumph, no vengeance—only an overwhelming, suffocating pity.

"You traded your family for a gilded cage, Walter," Julian said softly. "My father didn't destroy you. You destroyed yourself the day you decided money was worth more than human life."
