Chapter 12 - The Reckoning of Wealth

Within seventy-two hours, the financial world experienced an earthquake.

Julian Vance held a live international press conference from the steps of the Federal District Courthouse. He didn't hide behind high-priced public relations firms or issue carefully sanitized legal apologies. Standing before hundreds of flashing cameras in a simple black sweater, his neck tattoo visible to the world, he laid out every document, every bribe, and every fatal decision made by three generations of Vance Industries.

"Wealth accumulated through human suffering is not an asset; it is a crime," Julian declared into the forest of microphones. "Effective immediately, the board of Vance Industries is dissolved. All commercial assets will be liquidated under federal oversight. Every single cent—totaling four point two billion dollars—will be transferred into the Valley Basin Environmental and Health Restoration Trust."

A reporter shouted from the front row: "Mr. Vance, what will be left for you?"

Julian looked directly into the camera lens, his expression serene and unburdened for the first time in his life.

"My hands," he answered quietly. "And my freedom."

Behind the press pool, standing near the courthouse pillars with her arm in a light cast, Clara watched him. A faint, genuine smile touched her lips. He had demolished his own empire not out of guilt, but out of an unyielding reverence for the truth.
