Chapter 3 - Sanctuary in the Shadows
The service kitchen smelled of lemon wax, dried rosemary, and copper pipes—a stark contrast to the sterile, intimidating grandeur of the main halls. Julian lowered Clara onto a heavy oak bench, quickly securing the heavy brass deadbolt behind them.
From the first-aid kit mounted beside the industrial stove, Julian retrieved splinting bandages, sterile saline, and medical shears. His hands, adorned with heavy gold rings and calluses that bespoke an unpolished past, worked with surprising, delicate precision.
"You've done this before," Clara noted, wincing as he gently cleansed the laceration at her hairline.
"Before the inheritance, before the suits and the portfolio acquisitions, I worked a trauma bus in the East Ward," Julian said, applying sterile butterfly strips across the wound. "Blood looks the same whether it spills on cracked asphalt or Carrara marble."
Clara watched him intently. The gossip columns painted Julian Vance as an arrogant, reckless heir—a feral street kid plucked from obscurity by an eccentric dying tycoon who wanted to spite his corporate board. Yet sitting here in the dim light of an underground pantry, his eyes held no vanity. Only an unbearable weight of sorrow.
"Walter raised your father," Clara said quietly, testing the splint he wrapped around her wrist. "He spent his entire life maintaining the Vance empire. What could you possibly possess that would make him turn into a murderer?"
"The one thing my father never had," Julian answered, securing the velcro strap. "A conscience."
He reached into his inner pocket and pulled out a small, encrypted flash drive.

"Three weeks ago, I found the offshore trusts," Julian explained, his voice low and dangerous. "The Vance Foundation wasn't funding pediatric research facilities. It was laundering kickbacks for hazardous waste dumping in lower-income residential districts. Clara, your mother's pulmonary fibrosis... she lived in the Valley Basin, didn't she?"
Clara froze. The color drained completely from her face.
