Chapter 4 - The Legacy of Ash

"Say that again," Clara whispered, her fingers curling tightly around the edge of the oak table.

"The Valley Basin runoff project," Julian said, his eyes unflinching, bearing the guilt of an empire he had never asked to lead. "Thirty years ago, Vance Industries bribed state inspectors to bury three thousand drums of trichloroethylene beneath the municipal watershed. When the residents got sick, my father paid off the medical boards to declare it environmental bad luck. Walter was the bagman. He personally delivered the cash to every judge and doctor involved."

Tears pricked Clara’s eyes, not from physical trauma, but from the sudden, agonizing clarity of grief. Her mother had coughed her lungs out for a decade in a subsidized apartment, while the Vance family threw annual galas celebrating their philanthropic donations.

"And you knew?" she demanded, a tremor of betrayal vibrating in her tone.

"I found out five days ago," Julian said, stepping back, leaving himself completely unguarded before her fury. "The moment I verified the manifests, I drafted a complete confession to the Federal Trade Commission and the Attorney General. I called the morning board meeting to surrender the family patents and establish a restitution fund. Every single dollar of the Vance estate is earmarked for the victims' families."

He looked at her, entirely stripped of arrogance.

"Walter knew what that meant. If I sign those disclosures, the family name is ruined, the fortune evaporates, and Walter spends the remainder of his life in federal prison."

A muffled chime resonated through the kitchen walls. The master estate intercom flickered to life with a pop of static.

"Master Julian," Walter’s refined, chilling baritone crackled over the speaker. "Your idealism is as vulgar as your mother’s bloodline. I suggest you step into the courtyard. We have guests who are quite eager to review your corporate governance."
