Chapter 13 - Ashes into Gardens

Six months later, the Vance mansion no longer looked like an imposing fortress of greed.

The towering wrought-iron gates were permanently removed, replaced by open stone arches welcoming visitors from the valley below. The expansive, manicured lawn where tycoons once sipped vintage champagne had been tilled and transformed into a therapeutic community garden, fragrant with lavender, chamomile, and sweet basil.

The grand estate was now the Evelyn Adams Community Wellness and Pulmonary Rehabilitation Center.

Children played on the gravel pathways where armed contractors had once prowled, and elderly residents from the industrial basin sat on sunlit benches, breathing clean air filtered by state-of-the-art medical systems funded by the liquidated estate.

Julian wiped sweat from his brow with the back of his forearm. He wore worn denim jeans, work boots caked in rich soil, and a faded gray t-shirt. He had spent the morning helping a crew of local volunteers plant an orchard of young apple trees along the southern slope.

"You missed a spot," a familiar voice called out.

Julian turned to see Clara walking down the stone path. Her arm was completely healed, her blonde hair caught in a messy ponytail, holding two thermoses of cold lemonade.

"A real foreman never misses a spot," Julian laughed, setting his shovel against an oak stake and taking one of the thermoses. "How are the intake numbers for the pulmonary wing?"

"We admitted forty new patients this week," Clara said, her eyes shining with quiet joy. "Dr. Mercer says with the specialized treatment protocols, over eighty percent of them will see significant lung function recovery within a year."
