Chapter 1 - The Frigid TruthThe sterile hum of the telemetry unit filled Room 412, each sharp ping measuring the fading cadence of Clara’s heart. Mason stood frozen, his fingers rigid against the tailored lapels of his suit jacket. Behind him, Helena’s touch on his shoulder felt less like solace and more like a heavy iron brand. Her champagne silk dress caught the harsh fluorescents, shimmering with an unnerving elegance against the clinical gray linoleum.

"A neurotoxin, Mason," Dr. Daniel reiterated, his voice dropped to a guarded murmur. "Synthetically derived, tasteless, and metabolized rapidly. It mimics acute postpartum cardiomyopathy. Had her liver enzymes not triggered an automated secondary panel, we would have written this off as sudden organ failure."
Mason’s breath hitched. His eyes swept across the bed where Clara lay, her pale skin glistening with cold sweat beneath an oxygen mask, to the clear acrylic bassinet beside the wall. Inside rested their newborn twins, tiny chests rising and falling under pastel knit blankets, oblivious to the shadow hovering over their mother.
"Who had access to her IV line?" Mason demanded, turning slowly.
Helena withdrew her fingers subtly, smoothing her skirt. "Mason, darling, you can't possibly think—I only brought the iced chamomile tea Dr. Daniel approved earlier. I’ve been by your side every minute."

"The tea," Dr. Daniel noted carefully, writing on a digital clipboard without meeting her gaze. "We’ll need the tumbler preserved for toxicology. Standard protocol for any unexplained anomaly."
Helena offered an immaculate, sympathetic nod, but Mason saw the faint twitch at the corner of her mouth—a fleeting micro-expression he had overlooked for months during Clara’s difficult bedrest. Suspicion took root like winter frost, quiet and merciless.
