Chapter 9 - The Claws of JusticeHelena bolted toward the side balcony, reaching for her trench coat, but the library’s French doors swung open from the outside. Detective Vance and two uniformed officers stood in her path, service weapons drawn.

"Step away from the ledge and keep your hands visible, Ms. Vance," Detective Vance commanded.

Panicked, Helena lunged forward, attempting to smash the glass vial onto the hardwood floor to destroy the physical proof. Mason moved with blinding speed, catching her wrist in an unyielding grip, twisting it downward until the vial rolled harmlessly onto the Persian rug.

"Don't touch me!" Helena screamed, thrashing against the officers as handcuffs ratcheted around her wrists. "You have nothing! A circumstantial lab report and hearsay!"

"We have high-definition audio and video of you extracting the compound from your hidden compartment," Vance replied, bagging the vial with pristine latex gloves. "Along with a forensic match to the synthetic organophosphate shipped from an illegal distributor in Bratislava, billed to your shell company in Grand Cayman. It’s over, Helena. You’re looking at attempted aggravated murder and corporate fraud."

As they dragged her down the winding mahogany staircase, her hysterical curses echoed through the high ceilings, fading into the sirens wailing down the private drive.
