Chapter 15 - The Unbroken DawnOne year after the arrest, the family gathered on the beach at low tide. Leo and Maya splashed their bare feet in the shallow tide pools, squealing with delight as tiny hermit crabs scuttled across the wet sand. Dr. Daniel and Detective Vance joined them as honored friends, sharing a picnic basket under a broad canvas canopy.

"Pathology reports are completely clear," Dr. Daniel noted cheerfully, sipping an iced tea. "Your cardiovascular recovery is among the top two percent recorded in medical journals. You're a medical marvel, Clara."

"A stubborn one," Vance added with a rare, genuine smile. "Takes real tenacity to beat bad luck and bad people all in the same afternoon."

Clara laughed, the sound mingling effortlessly with the sea breeze. She stood up, taking Mason’s hand and leading him down toward the water’s edge where the twins were constructing an uneven castle of wet sand.
