Chapter 5 - Unraveling the WebBy dawn, Detective Vance returned with a warrant. Forensic technicians had swabbed the personal suite’s bathroom, Helena’s designer handbag, and the discarded tea set.

"We found micro-residue of dimethyl sulfoxide on a cosmetic applicator in her purse," Vance reported quietly to Mason in the stairwell. "It’s a transdermal carrier often paired with organophosphates to speed up absorption. She didn't put it in the tea, Mason. She dabbed it onto the rubber injection port of Clara’s IV line while pretending to adjust her blanket."
Mason felt a terrifying coldness settle inside his chest, replacing the panic with absolute resolve. "Do you have enough to arrest her?"
"Not beyond reasonable doubt yet," Vance conceded. "Her defense team will argue cross-contamination from cosmetic solvents unless we locate the primary vial or link her to the purchase source. Her offshore accounts are shielded behind three layers of shell corporations in Panama."
"Then we make her link herself," Mason said, his gaze turning stone-hard. "She thinks Clara is slipping into a fatal coma. She thinks her plan is succeeding. We give her the illusion of total victory."

Vance studied him for a long moment, evaluating the steel behind the corporate executive’s grief. "If we do this, you have to play the shattered widower. One slip, and she purges the remaining evidence."
"I will give the performance of my life," Mason vowed.
