Chapter 1 - The Weight of an Oath

The hush inside Courtroom 4B carried a suffocating chill. Six-year-old Toby shifted his weight across the polished parquet floor, scuffed sneakers squeaking faintly against the high silence. Overhead, warm brass sconces flickered faintly, casting elongated shadows across the imposing mahogany bench. Towering above him sat Judge Harrison Vance, whose steely silver eyes had witnessed thirty years of hardened criminals. Yet today, those eyes narrowed with rare hesitation upon the small, trembling figure clad in a rumpled light blue button-up shirt.

Behind the wooden partition, Mark Jensen sat bound not by chains, but by the agonizing terror of a helpless father. Tears tracked through his stubbled jaw, catching the amber glow of the lamps. Mark clenched his fists until his knuckles turned ash-white. Accused of an armed warehouse burglary that left an off-duty deputy hospitalized, every shred of circumstantial evidence pointed straight at his throat. His alibi had collapsed; his public defender had already conceded defeat behind closed doors. Only one person could substantiate his whereabouts on that stormy Friday night: his son.

""Son, look at me,"" Judge Vance said, his voice rumbling like distant thunder through the bench’s microphone. ""Do you understand what an oath means?""

Toby swallowed, his throat bobbing visibly. A tear spilled down his flushed cheek, dripping onto the collar of his shirt. He turned slightly, catching sight of his father’s red-rimmed eyes. Mark shook his head almost imperceptibly, mouthing a desperate plea: Don't do it.

The boy faced the judge once more. ""My daddy taught me that a lie is a shadow that swallows the sun,"" Toby whispered, small hands curling tight into the hem of his shirt. ""He was with me. He was tucking me into bed.""

Prosecutor Marcus Croft rose smoothly from his table, an icy smile curling his thin lips. ""A touching rehearsed sentiment, Your Honor. But children remember what desperate men coach them to say."" Croft stepped forward, lifting an evidence envelope. ""If your father was at your bedside at ten o'clock, Toby... why did traffic cameras capture his truck five miles away, fleeing the docks?""

Toby blinked through rising tears, his breath catching in his throat as the courtroom waited for an answer he didn't possess.
