Chapter 9 - The Judge's Reckoning

""Hold your fire!"" Judge Vance commanded, his voice slicing through the echoes of the stairwell with thunderous authority.
The two state troopers raised their rifles over the railing, laser sights painting bright green dots across Detective Donald Vance’s chest. The detective froze on the mid-landing, his revolver halfway raised, looking up into the unyielding gaze of his own flesh and blood.
""Drop the weapon, Donald,"" Judge Vance ordered coldly. ""Drop it, or they will put you down right on these steps.""
Donald’s chest heaved, water and sweat dripping from his chin. His eyes darted between the two troopers and his uncle. ""You're making a mistake, Harrison! The boy is lying! Jensen was dirty—he’s been running drops for the cartel at the docks for six months!""
""Is that why the courthouse security cameras recorded your personal vehicle bypassing the gate fifteen minutes before the power grid was sabotage-cut?"" Judge Vance replied, stepping down one step, his black robe billowing behind him. ""Is that why internal affairs just raided your locker and found the missing security log from Pier 17?""
Donald’s face drained of color. The arrogance that had carried him through the morning collapsed into desperate panic. With a bitter curse, he let the revolver slip from his fingers. It clattered down the concrete stairs, coming to rest at Mark's feet.
The troopers moved swiftly, pinning Donald against the wall and snapping steel cuffs around his wrists.
Mark collapsed onto the stairs, trembling with exhaustion, his forehead resting against the cold iron railing. Toby scrambled down the steps and threw his arms around his father’s neck, burying his face in Mark’s soaked shirt.
Judge Vance walked down the flight of stairs, stopping in front of the father and son. He looked down at the boy with profound sorrow and respect.
""Son,"" the judge said softly. ""The courthouse is secure. But we have one more matter to resolve.""

Toby looked up through wet lashes. ""The shiny thing in the drain, sir... did someone get it?""
Judge Vance nodded slowly. ""The state troopers just recovered it. And what was on it will change everything.""
