Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Chamber

""This is completely out of line, Your Honor!"" Croft hissed behind the privacy of the sidebar screen. ""The defense is manufacturing a ridiculous conspiracy out of the mouth of a frightened juvenile.""
Hayes leaned in, his tone sharp and uncompromising. ""My client’s missing finger is documented medical fact, Marcus. That glove was manufactured and worn by someone with five fully intact fingers. And now an eyewitness places your lead detective behind the wheel of the stolen vehicle.""
Judge Vance looked past the attorneys, staring at the small boy standing bravely beside the wooden railing. The boy was trembling, clutching his faded blue shirt, terrified yet unyielding. Vance rubbed his furrowed brow. The name Vance carried prestige in the county; Donald was his brother’s son, a man decorated with commendations, yet shadowed by whispers of illicit narcotics ties that internal affairs had never been able to prove.
""Mr. Croft,"" Judge Vance said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. ""Where are the dashcam recordings from Detective Vance’s patrol unit on the night of the warehouse burglary?""
Croft cleared his throat uncomfortably. ""The detective reported a battery malfunction earlier that evening, Your Honor. The unit did not record between nine PM and two AM.""
Hayes let out a cold, cynical laugh. ""What a remarkable coincidence.""
""That is enough,"" Judge Vance commanded. He pulled away from the huddle and straightened his robe, addressing the packed room with solemn authority. ""In light of the physical discrepancy regarding People’s Exhibit Four and the unexpected witness statement, this court is declaring a four-hour recess. The jury will remain sequestered. Detective Donald Vance will surrender his service weapon and departmental credentials to the bailiff immediately, pending an evidentiary review in my chambers.""
A sharp murmur rippled through the gallery. Detective Vance’s smirk vanished, replaced by an expression of pure, venomous rage.

As the bailiff approached him, Vance reached into his suit jacket. For a split second, Mark gasped, thinking the detective was drawing iron. Instead, Vance threw his gold shield onto the wooden bench with a contemptuous clatter, turned on his heel, and marched toward the double doors.
Before pushing them open, Vance caught Toby’s gaze one last time, mouthing two silent words that froze the boy's blood: Tonight, kid.
