Chapter 14 - Scales of Deceit

Mark pushed Hayes and Toby behind a heavy concrete support column, his heart pounding like a war drum. ""Croft... you were in on it from the beginning.""

Croft chuckled softly, adjusting his spectacles with his free hand. ""Did you really think a detective on a city salary could orchestrate an eight-million-dollar inventory cleanse across three bonded terminals? Donald was just the muscle, Mark. He stole your truck because you were the perfect scapegoat—a former convict working at the mill with no credibility and a convenient set of tools.""

""And Donald’s escape on the interstate?"" Judge Vance demanded, standing resolute in the center of the garage floor, refusing to flinch before Croft’s weapon. ""You ordered the hit on your own partner?""

""Donald became a liability the moment he allowed a six-year-old child to outsmart him on the witness stand,"" Croft replied coldly. ""His body will turn up in the bay by midnight, looking like an unfortunate overdose while on the run. And as for you, Harrison... an escaped convict and his lawyer overpowered the marshals in the tunnel, a shootout ensued, and tragically, the venerable Judge Vance caught a stray bullet.""

Croft raised his weapon, lining the sights with the center of the judge’s forehead. ""A neat, tragic story that wraps up every single loose end.""

Behind the column, Toby was trembling, his fingers brushing against his jacket pocket. He remembered the small, heavy object the judge had given him on the bench. He reached out and tugged his father’s shirt.

""Daddy,"" Toby whispered barely above a breath, pointing toward the emergency wall unit right beside the pillar. It was an industrial halogen fire-suppression override switch, painted bright orange with a pull-chain designed to dump dry chemical foam across the motor pool in case of fuel leaks.

Mark looked at the switch, then at the two federal marshals pinned beside the next pillar, their angles blocked by Croft’s gunmen. Mark nodded once.

""Croft!"" Mark shouted, stepping half an inch into view to draw their gaze. ""The boy didn't see your face on that flash drive! Let Toby walk away with Hayes! He doesn't know anything about you!""

""I don't leave loose threads, Jensen,"" Croft said, his finger tightening on the trigger.

""Now, Toby!"" Mark roared.

Toby hurled the heavy wooden gavel with all his young might straight at the glass protective casing of the emergency switch.
