Chapter 3 - The Left-Handed Flaw

The entire courtroom seemed to draw in a collective breath. Prosecutor Croft paused mid-stride, turning toward the boy with a look of patronizing curiosity. ""You recognize a generic black work glove, young man?""

""Objection,"" Hayes interjected, stepping beside Toby. ""The witness is answering a direct observation.""

""Overruled. Let the child speak,"" Vance ordered, eyes boring into the evidence bag. ""Why do you say it isn't your father's glove, Toby?""

Toby pointed a trembling finger at the thick, rubber-palmed glove sealed within the clear evidence sleeve. ""Daddy lost his little finger two years ago at the metal mill. On his right hand. Whenever he buys work gloves, he always takes scissors and cuts off the pinky finger so it doesn't flap around when he holds his wrenches.""

A heavy silence descended upon the bench. Hayes seized the moment, lunging forward with sudden ferocity. ""Your Honor, People's Exhibit Four is an intact, five-fingered right-hand glove! The inner seam has never been altered or cut!""

Croft’s expression hardened. ""That proves nothing. A thief would easily wear a whole glove during a felony to conceal missing appendages or avoid leaving distinct marks.""

""Except the forensic report clearly states the glove bore extensive interior sweat DNA consistent with long-term wear,"" Hayes countered, his voice rising with newfound adrenaline. ""A man with four fingers cannot wear down the fifth finger groove of a heavy industrial glove without altering its shape!""

Judge Vance leaned forward, adjusting his reading glasses as he scrutinized the forensic paperwork before him. ""The defense makes a valid physical point. Mr. Croft, who logged this particular item into custody?""

Croft hesitated, his eyes shifting toward the back row of the gallery. ""Detective Donald Vance, precinct lead investigator.""

Toby turned his head toward the back doors, his eyes widening in pure terror. Sitting in the shadowed rear row was Detective Vance—a burly man with cold, sunken eyes.

Toby grabbed his lawyer’s sleeve, his voice squeaking with genuine dread. ""That's him... That's the man who was driving Daddy's truck.""
