Chapter 7 - Darkness in the Vault

Panic detonated instantly. In the pitch blackness, the heavy magnetic door locks throughout the courthouse basement disengaged with a succession of loud, pneumatic thuds.

""Mark, stay down!"" Hayes shouted, his voice bouncing off the concrete walls.

Mark lunged across the table, wrapping his arms protectively around Toby and dragging him beneath the sturdy metal table. ""Toby, close your eyes and hold onto my belt. Don't let go no matter what happens!""

Outside in the hallway, the sudden shrill wail of a fire alarm pierced the air, followed by shouting voices and the heavy thud of tactical boots against tile. Through the small reinforced glass window in the holding room door, red emergency beacons began to pulse, bathing the room in rhythmic, bloody flashes of light.

A keycard reader outside the door beeped three times—green.

The heavy steel door swung open smoothly. A tall silhouette filled the doorway, backlit by the strobing crimson lights. The figure wore black tactical fatigues and held a silenced automatic pistol lowered at his hip.

""Mr. Jensen,"" a muffled, distorted voice spoke through a ballistic balaclava. ""Make this easy. Step out into the corridor with the child, and we’ll ensure your transfer vehicle doesn't encounter any fatal accidents.""

Mark held his breath under the table, feeling Toby’s small chest heaving against his ribs. The boy was crying silently, tears soaking through Mark's prison-issue shirt, but he did not make a sound. Toby remembered his father's rule: When hunters are in the woods, the rabbit stays silent.

Footsteps clicked rhythmically against the floor, stepping into the room. The intruder swung the barrel toward the underside of the table.

Suddenly, Attorney Hayes hurled the heavy laminate chair from the darkness with all his might. The metal legs struck the gunman across the shoulders, throwing off his aim as a muffled pop-pop sent two slugs ricocheting wildly off the concrete floor.

""Run!"" Hayes roared, tackling the armed intruder around the waist.

Mark didn't hesitate. Grabbing Toby in his arms, he scrambled from beneath the table and burst out into the chaotic, smoke-filled hallway.
