Chapter 12 - Broken Armor

The federal convoy pulled away from Elmira Court, their red and blue lights fading into the wet mist of dawn. Local police cleared the charred wreckage of the apartment building, leaving Clara and Officer Miller standing by his cruiser under the amber glow of sunrise.

The physical shock of the night was settling deep into Clara’s bones. Every muscle in her neck ached where Julian had pinned her against the hallway wall; her split lip stung sharply against the morning wind.

Miller handed her a warm paper cup of black coffee from a nearby breakfast cart. ""You played a long game, Mrs. Vance. Most people would have folded under half that pressure.""

Clara took a sip, the bitter warmth steadying her hands. ""I didn't play a game, Officer. I survived. When you live with a predator, you learn to read the shifts in the wind before the storm hits. If I had flinched once tonight, Julian would have buried me.""

""What will you do now?"" Miller asked gently. ""The federal trial will take months. Julian has resources, even frozen ones.""

""Julian is done,"" Clara said quietly, looking at her reflection in the cruiser window. The bruise was dark purple now, blooming across her cheekbone like an ugly badge of honor. But beneath the bruise, her eyes were no longer the frightened, hunted eyes of a victim.

""I need to see my sister,"" Clara said, crushing the paper cup in her hand.

""Hop in,"" Miller said, opening the cruiser's passenger door for her. ""I'll give you an escort to the federal staging area.""

As the squad car pulled away from the curb, Clara's personal phone—which had been silenced throughout the night—vibrated violently in her coat pocket.

The screen flashed with an incoming call from an unknown private number. Clara answered, putting the receiver to her ear.

""Clara,"" a hoarse, unfamiliar voice spoke in a ragged whisper. ""Arthur Vance lied to you. Get out of that police car right now.""
