Chapter 2 - Shadows on the Roof

The sudden sound of breaking glass overhead instantly altered the room’s atmosphere. Officer Miller drew his sidearm to the low-ready position, signaling Torres to keep Julian and Clara secured in the foyer.
""Stay right where you are,"" Miller ordered sternly before turning toward the staircase. ""Dispatch, this is Unit 4-Adam. We have potential secondary intruders on scene. Send backup.""
Julian's smugness transformed into visible agitation. His gaze flicked rapidly toward the ceiling, his jaw working as if chewing through rapid contingency calculations. Clara knew that look. It was the precise expression he wore when a risky investment faced liquidation. He had prepared for her rebellion, but whatever was upstairs was entirely outside his script.
""Julian, who else is in the house?"" Torres demanded, noticing the sweat now shining on his forehead.

Torres didn't take the bait. He reached for his handcuffs. ""Turn around, Mr. Vance. Hands behind your back until we clear the premises.""
""You have no right!"" Julian hissed, pulling his arms away in indignation. ""I am the managing director of—""
A heavy thud rattled the ceiling drywall directly above them, followed by rapid, panicked footsteps racing across the master bedroom floor toward the back balcony.
Clara felt the cold breath of dread enter her lungs. Her safe, hidden inside the walk-in closet behind Julian's shoe rack, contained the ledger—the real financial records proving Julian's shell corporations had laundered offshore illicit funds. If someone was upstairs, they were not after jewelry.

""The safe,"" Clara whispered, grabbing Torres's sleeve. ""They're destroying the evidence.""
A gunshot tore through the ceiling, raining pulverized plaster down upon their heads.
