Chapter 3 - The Broken Ledger
The gunshot silenced every voice in the hallway. Plaster dust settled like chalk over Clara’s hair and the navy shoulders of Julian’s shirt. Officer Torres reacted instantly, slamming Julian face-first against the wall and clicking the steel cuffs over his wrists before he could protest.
""Down! Both of you get down on the floor!"" Torres commanded, shielding Clara with his body as he drew his service weapon.
Julian lay on his side against the baseboard, his face red with fury and panic. ""Call my attorney, Clara! Tell them to call Vance and Sterling! You don't know what you've done!""
From the top of the stairs, Officer Miller shouted down, ""Clear! Suspect fled out the master bedroom window onto the garage roof! Drop point shows blood—he cut himself on the window frame!""
Clara pulled herself up using the banister, coughing through the haze of drywall. She ignored Julian’s muffled curses and moved toward the stairs. She had lived under Julian's thumb for five years, enduring calculated psychological torment and deliberate isolation. She refused to cower on the floor while her freedom hung by a thread.
""Ma'am, wait here!"" Torres called out, but Clara had already taken the first three steps.
When she reached the master bedroom, the cold night air blasted into the room from the shattered double French doors. Rain splattered across the expensive wool rug. The iron safe door hung wide open, its combination dial smashed off with a masonry chisel.
Inside, the compartment was empty. The physical ledger detailing names, accounts, and the names of corrupt municipal officials was gone.

Miller stood by the open terrace, scanning the wet lawn below with his tactical flashlight. ""Whoever it was knew the layout. Took the ledger, ignored the cash and watch collection.""
Clara walked to the dresser and picked up a single torn scrap of paper left on the dark wood. It was an address scribbled in familiar, neat blue ink—her estranged sister’s address.
