Chapter 12 - The Body Double

Victoria pulled the encrypted handheld scanner from the case, her fingers flying over the keypad with furious speed. She replayed the biometric scans taken during the wedding prep three weeks prior.
The height matched. The facial structure matched. The voice cadence matched down to a 98% accuracy. But as she cross-referenced the medical records of Julian Thorne’s childhood orthopedic surgeries, the screen flashed red with a glaring discrepancy: the real Julian Thorne had fractured his left collarbone in an equestrian accident at age twelve.
The corpse lying in the bridal suite had no clavicle fracture.
"A decoy," Victoria hissed, slamming her palm onto the oak table. "The Thorne syndicate was playing a game within a game."
Elena limped into the cabin, holding a fresh ice pack against her bruised ribs. "What did you find?"
"Julian was never in that room," Victoria said, turning the monitor toward her. "The man who tried to hit me with a golf club was a surgically altered proxy. A sacrificial lamb groomed to take the fall if our family moved against them. While Silas was negotiating with me, and while Arthur was setting up the assassination, the real Julian was already on a private transport to London with the secondary cipher."
Elena’s eyes widened. "Why London? The Thorne banking connections are in Zurich and Frankfurt."
"The Sovereign Vault," Victoria realized, her teeth clenching until her jaw ached. "The British crown reserves hold the physical gold bullion that my grandfather deposited in 1974. The Black Ledger only contains the financial transactions—the real Julian holds the bearer bonds that can physically withdraw three billion dollars in untraceable bullion from the Bank of England's private annex."
"If Arthur joins forces with Julian in London," Elena said, "they won't just control the Vane syndicate. They will possess enough liquid wealth to buy an entire mercenary army. We won't even make it across the English Channel alive."
Victoria paced the small wood-paneled cabin, her mind calculating moves and countermoves with computational speed. The grief and exhaustion had burned away, leaving only pure, crystalline tactical thought.
"Arthur believes I am dead," Victoria reasoned out loud. "Gabriel's body hasn't been recovered yet because the fire on the third floor will take hours to suppress. The local authorities will assume the female corpse in the suite belonged to me or one of the staff. Arthur thinks he has forty-eight hours of absolute silence."
"Then we strike first," Elena urged.
"No," Victoria countered, stopping before a maritime chart pinned to the bulkhead. "If we rush to London, we play on Arthur's home turf. He controls the Metropolitan Police, he controls Heathrow, and he has private security contractors stationed at every port on the Thames. We do not chase them."
"Then what do we do?"
Victoria picked up an antique pair of brass navigation dividers and drove the steel point directly into the map, pinning the small dot representing the island of Jersey in the English Channel.
"Julian has the bearer bonds, but he cannot access the Bank of England vault without the master biometric token," Victoria revealed. "A token that was never in the Thorne manor."
Elena looked puzzled. "Where is it?"

Victoria reached up to her ear, unhooking the teardrop diamond earring she had worn throughout the entire bloodbath. She unscrewed the delicate platinum backing, revealing a microscopic micro-chip encased in synthetic resin beneath the jewel.
"My mother gave me these earrings on my eighteenth birthday," Victoria said softly. "Silas thought they were wedding jewelry. Arthur thought they were family heirlooms. Without this chip, Julian’s bearer bonds are worthless paper. He will have to come to me."
