Chapter 8 - Treachery in the Bloodline

The air in the room combusted as Victoria fired. Three rounds punched through Viktor’s upper chest armor, knocking the massive Russian back against the mahogany desk, but the heavy Kevlar absorbed the fatal penetration. Viktor roared like a wounded bear, firing two deafening rounds from his massive handgun.

One bullet pulverized the marble mantle beside Victoria's ear, showering her hair with stone dust; the second ripped through Elena’s tactical vest, spinning the assassin backward onto the hardwood floor with a sharp intake of breath.

Victoria did not retreat. Dropping her empty submachine gun, she closed the distance in two explosive strides. She drew her tactical combat knife, sweeping Viktor’s gun arm aside with her left forearm while driving the blade downward toward his unarmored neck.

Viktor caught her wrist in mid-air with a grip like a hydraulic vise. He twisted, using his colossal mass to slam Victoria into the heavy oak desk, sending antique lamps and crystal decanters crashing to the floor.

"You're fast, girl!" Viktor spat, blood flecking his beard as he leaned his full weight onto her throat. "But you're too young to know how real monsters fight!"

Victoria choked back the lack of air, her eyes burning with an unholy intensity. She didn't struggle against his overwhelming grip; instead, she let her right hand go limp, releasing the knife. As the blade dropped, her left hand caught it in mid-air beneath his guard, driving the steel upward through the soft tissue beneath Viktor’s jaw, plunging the four-inch blade deep into his brain.

Viktor’s eyes bulged. His massive hands trembled, freezing in place. A gargling sound escaped his throat as Victoria twisted the blade half an inch, extinguishing the light in his eyes forever.

With a heavy shove, she rolled the colossal body off her, falling to the floor beside him, gasping for breath. The white lace of her bridal dress was now completely saturated with crimson, torn at the shoulder, revealing the pale, bruised skin beneath.

"Elena!" Victoria coughed, scrambling across the floor to where her enforcer lay.

Elena was propped against a burning bookshelf, clutching her side. The Kevlar had stopped the bullet from piercing her lungs, but two ribs were visibly fractured beneath her leather armor. She coughed, spitting dark blood onto the floor.

"I'm... I'm functional, my Lady," Elena gasped through clenched teeth. "The briefcase... check the briefcase."

Victoria pulled the titanium case from Viktor’s dead grip. The digital display was flashing with an active remote signal, syncing with an IP address routed through Zurich.

The Black Ledger was inside, secured behind a biometric glass lock. But beside the ledger sat an active satellite transmitter, broadcasting the decoded files in real-time to an offshore server.

Victoria tapped the screen, overriding the data stream with her personal master key. The transmission log popped up on the tiny monitor, displaying the identity of the recipient who had authorized the remote access code.

The name on the screen made Victoria’s blood run colder than any bullet ever could.

Recipient: Arthur Vane.

Her own uncle. The senior patriarch who had blessed her mission to dismantle the Thorne dynasty.

"It was never about the Thornes," Victoria whispered, the puzzle pieces falling into place with brutal clarity. "Arthur used me as a battering ram to break into the Thorne vault, eliminate their leadership, and retrieve the ledger, while having Viktor kill me in the crossfire. He takes the throne of the Vane syndicate, the Thorne assets, and the ledger in one stroke."

Elena looked up, horror in her eyes. "Gabriel... Lady Victoria, Gabriel is down in the bridal suite with Silas and Julian!"

Victoria grabbed the titanium case, her exhaustion instantly replaced by an electric surge of survival instinct. "Gabriel isn't a victim, Elena. If Arthur planned this... Gabriel is the one who let them in."
