Chapter 14 - The Sovereign's Reckoning

Julian’s smirk vanished. He instinctively tapped his tactical earpiece, his face draining of color as the silence on the channel hit his ears. "Perimeter Team Alpha, report. Bravo, report!"
Static. Pure, dead static.
From the shadows of the warehouse catwalks high above, red laser dots suddenly rained down through the mist, landing simultaneously on the chests and foreheads of the eight mercenaries guarding the Range Rovers.
Silently, without a single shout, high-velocity suppressed rounds dropped all eight men within three seconds. They collapsed onto the concrete like marionettes whose strings had been cut, their weapons clattering against the floor.
Julian panicked, stumbling backward toward the Range Rover, drawing a concealed chrome pistol from his coat. "What is this?! Who are these men?!"
From the shadows behind the stacked shipping containers emerged twenty operatives clad in antique black trench coats, bearing the double-headed serpent crest pinned to their collars. They were the Old Guard—veterans who had sworn personal oaths of fealty to Victoria's father, men who answered only to the direct bloodline, not to corporate boards or syndicate councils.
Arthur Vane did not run. He did not draw a weapon. He stood frozen, his ivory cane gripped so tightly his knuckles turned white through his gloves. His calculating eyes darted from the red dots on his chest to the icy gaze of his niece.
"The Sovereign Council held an emergency session four hours ago in Zurich, Arthur," Victoria said, taking slow, deliberate steps toward them. Her voice was pure judgment, echoing through the cathedral of concrete and steel. "Elena broadcast the audio recording of your private satellite call with Viktor Petrov directly into the Grand Chamber."
Arthur’s jaw tightened. "They would never vote against me. I control forty percent of the voting trust!"
"You controlled forty percent," Victoria corrected him. "Until the council learned that you conspired with the Russian cartels to leak the Black Ledger. Treason against an individual heir is tolerated in our world, Arthur. Treason against the collective secrecy of the High Table is punishable by total erasure."
She stopped three feet from her uncle.
"The Council ratified my succession thirty minutes ago," she continued, her voice devoid of triumph, carrying only the terrifying weight of absolute authority. "I am now the sole Grand Sovereign of the House of Vane. Your assets are seized. Your bank accounts are liquidated. Your name has already been expunged from the family registry."
Arthur looked at her, his aristocratic composure finally fracturing. A deep, ancient terror surfaced in his pale eyes. "Victoria... I am your blood. I carried you in my arms when you were a child. You cannot do this."
"You taught me that blood is a liability when it stops obeying," Victoria replied, echoing the words he had spoken to her at her father’s funeral.
Julian, driven mad by terror, suddenly raised his chrome gun toward Victoria's head, screaming, "Die, you bitch—!"
Victoria did not even flinch.
A single shot cracked from the catwalk above. The bullet took Julian’s hand off at the wrist. The gun dropped to the floor along with his severed fingers, and Julian collapsed onto the concrete, howling in agonizing shock, clutching his spurting arm.
Victoria didn't look at Julian. She kept her eyes locked onto Arthur.
"You have two choices, Uncle," Victoria offered coldly. "You can take the ivory cane handle, twist it four inches to the right, and swallow the cyanide capsule your father placed inside it sixty years ago. Or I can hand you over to the Petrov cartel, who are currently looking for someone to blame for the death of their patriarch."
May you like
Arthur stared at her, his chest heaving under his Savile Row coat. He looked down at his beloved ivory cane, then at the severed, weeping boy on the floor, and finally into the merciless hazel eyes of the girl he had tried to break.
With trembling, aged fingers, Arthur Vane grasped the ivory wolf's head handle.
