Chapter 10 - Into the Storm

The threat hung in the crisp morning air like poison. Daniel knew Marcus well enough to realize it wasn’t an empty boast; the syndicate possessed the resources, the muscle, and the absolute ruthlessness to turn an entire neighborhood into a war zone just to eliminate a single loose end.

“Don’t do it, Daniel!” Claire cried out from the doorway, stepping partially into the light, her face stricken with panic. “If you get in that car, you’re walking straight to your execution!”

Daniel didn't turn around, but his shoulders tightened visibly at the sound of her voice. He kept his dark eyes locked onto Marcus, measuring every twitch of the older man’s fingers, calculating the impossible odds of a firefight in an open alley with an infant present.

“Go back inside, Claire,” Daniel commanded, his voice eerily calm, stripped of all emotion.

“I’m not leaving you!” she sobbed, taking another step forward.

“Listen to me,” Daniel whispered fiercely, finally glancing back over his shoulder just enough to meet her tear-filled eyes. “Take the car parked around the corner in slot forty-two. The keys are in the visor. Drive north to the cabin. Do not stop for anyone, do not answer your phone, and do not look back.”

“Daniel—”

“Do it!” he roared, a sudden burst of raw authority that made Claire flinch. He turned back to face Marcus, slowly raising his empty hands to show he was surrendering. “I’m coming, Marcus. Leave them out of sight.”

Marcus smiled, gesturing toward the back door of the sedan. “A wise choice, Daniel. I always knew you had a soft spot for domestic theatrics.”

As two armed operatives stepped out of the front seats of the sedan to intercept Daniel, Claire stood paralyzed with grief and terror. She clutched the baby tighter against her chest, her mind screaming for her to run, even as her heart shattered watching the man she loved trade his life for theirs.

With a final, agonizing glance in her direction, Daniel allowed the operatives to shove him into the back of the car. The door slammed shut with a heavy, final thud, and the vehicle peeled out of the alleyway, disappearing into the heavy morning traffic.
