Chapter 9 - The Ultimatum

The descent down twenty-four flights of concrete stairs was a grueling, nerve-wracking ordeal. Every echoing footstep felt deafening, and every shadow cast by the dim emergency lighting looked like an approaching threat. Daniel led the way, his eyes darting into every corner, his body primed for violence, while Claire clutched the baby tightly against her chest, whispering endless soothing lullabies to keep the infant from crying out.

When they finally reached the basement service exit, the cold, crisp morning air rushed in to greet them. But freedom was short-lived. Parked directly across the narrow alleyway was a sleek, tinted black sedan—the exact vehicle described by the courier.

Daniel froze, pulling Claire back behind the heavy steel door of the stairwell just as the passenger door of the sedan swung open.

Marcus stepped out of the car. He was impeccably dressed in a dark wool overcoat, his silver hair neatly combed, his expression entirely devoid of emotion. He adjusted his leather gloves and looked directly toward the service exit, as if he had known precisely where they would emerge.

“Daniel,” Marcus called out, his voice carrying effortlessly across the quiet alley. “Running away won’t change the destination, my boy. You can’t outrun your own shadow.”

Daniel stepped out from the shadows of the doorway, putting himself squarely between Marcus and the exit where Claire and the baby were hidden.

“Leave them out of this, Marcus,” Daniel shouted back, his voice echoing off the brick walls. “This was between you and me from the day I walked away.”

Marcus chuckled, taking a slow, measured step toward them. “Nothing is ever just between us, Daniel. You took syndicate assets when you vanished. And more importantly, you think you can build a new life while leaving old debts unpaid?”

“Name your price,” Daniel said coldly, his hand sliding down toward his waist where a concealed hunting knife rested in its sheath. “Take everything I have left. Just let Claire and the child walk away.”

Marcus stopped ten feet away, a cruel smile playing on his lips. He tilted his head, looking past Daniel toward the open doorway where Claire stood frozen in terror.

“That’s the beauty of it, Daniel,” Marcus whispered softly. “I don’t want your money. I want your complete, absolute surrender. Get in the car, or watch me burn this entire city block to the ground.”
