Chapter 5 - Whispers Before Dawn

The first faint streaks of pale blue light began to bleed through the eastern horizon, casting long, melancholic shadows across the high-rise apartment. The apartment was dead silent except for the soft, rhythmic hum of the air purifier and the occasional sleepy sigh of the baby sleeping peacefully in Claire’s arms.
Daniel sat across the room on the edge of the minimalist sofa, his hands clasped tightly between his knees. The adrenaline had faded, leaving behind the dull, agonizing ache of old scars and fresh cuts across his knuckles. He looked every bit the fugitive he was trying so desperately not to be.
“You have to leave,” Claire said softly, her voice raspy from hours of crying. She didn't look at him; her gaze remained fixed on the infant's tiny, flawless face. “That man—Vince—he knows where we are now. Staying here is a death sentence.”
“I’m not leaving you to face them alone,” Daniel replied, his voice firm, carrying a stubborn finality that brooked no argument. “If I walk out that door now, Vince will be back with reinforcements before the sun reaches noon. My fight is right here.”
Claire finally lifted her eyes, meeting his gaze with a mixture of exhaustion and deep-seated pain. “And what about us, Daniel? Every second you breathe the same air as us, you put a target on this crib. I spent nine months pretending I was strong enough to do this alone, but last night proved I can’t protect a baby from an entire criminal syndicate by myself.”
“Which is exactly why I’m staying,” Daniel insisted, standing up and taking a slow, hesitant step toward her. “Let me fix this. Just give me twenty-four hours to clean up the mess I left behind.”
“And how do you plan to do that?” Claire challenged bitterly, a humorless chuckle escaping her lips. “By going back to the underworld? By becoming the monster you swore you left behind?”

Daniel stopped inches away from her. He didn't touch her, but the heat radiating from his body filled the space between them. “Sometimes, Claire, to protect the light, you have to dive straight back into the dark.”
Before Claire could answer, her phone—resting face-down on the glass coffee table—lit up with an incoming text message from an unknown, restricted number.
