Chapter 13 - Breaking Point

The heavy industrial warehouse was freezing, filled with the smell of salt water, rust, and old oil. Daniel was strapped securely to a heavy metal chair in the center of the dilapidated room, his face bruised and bloodied from where Vince had struck him the moment he was brought inside.
Marcus stood a few feet away, watching with cold indifference as Vince paced back and forth across the concrete floor, holding the satellite phone up triumphantly.
“Just got confirmation from the road team,” Vince grinned maliciously, his bruised jaw accentuating his wicked smile. “They found her car on the northern highway. The girl and the brat are cornered.”
Daniel’s head snapped up, his dark eyes blazing with sudden, terrifying fury. He strained violently against the heavy leather straps binding his arms to the chair, the metal frame groaning under the pressure. “If you touch them, Vince, I swear to God I will tear your throat out with my bare teeth!”
“Save your breath, Daniel,” Marcus said smoothly, walking over and placing a heavy hand on Vince’s shoulder. “You brought this on yourself the moment you thought you could hide from the syndicate. Now, where is the ledger? This is your very last chance to tell me before my men finish what they started on that highway.”
Daniel stared at Marcus, his chest heaving with ragged breaths. The tattoos on his neck stood out in sharp relief against his pale skin. He knew that if he told them the ledger didn't exist, they would kill Claire and the baby without hesitation. But if he lied and made up a location, they would hunt them down anyway.
There was only one play left.

“The ledger isn't hidden in the city,” Daniel whispered hoarsely, lifting his head to meet Marcus’s gaze with a chilling, deadpan calm. “It’s buried under the floorboards of the cabin upstate. The exact cabin they’re driving to right now.”
Marcus narrowed his eyes, studying Daniel’s face for any sign of deception. Before he could speak, the heavy metal doors at the front of the warehouse were suddenly blown inward with a deafening crash as a black tactical vehicle smashed through the barrier, its headlights cutting blindingly through the dusty air.
