Chapter 12 - Echoes of Betrayal

Miles away from the industrial shipyard, the roaring engine of the stolen sedan cut through the quiet northern highway. Claire drove with white-knuckled intensity, her eyes darting constantly between the winding road ahead and the rearview mirror. In the back seat, the baby slept soundly in a makeshift nest of blankets inside the carrier, entirely oblivious to the storm raging around them.

The GPS on the dashboard flashed a warning route, but Claire ignored it, pushing the vehicle faster as she followed Daniel’s instructions to head toward the isolated cabin upstate. Every nerve in her body was screaming, every instinct telling her that she was driving straight into a trap or leaving the only man she truly loved to die alone.

Her phone, resting on the passenger seat, suddenly lit up. It wasn't a text message this time; it was an incoming audio call from an unknown, encrypted satellite frequency.

Claire hesitated, her hand hovering over the steering wheel before she finally tapped the speakerphone button with a trembling finger.

“Hello?” she called out, her voice cracking with suppressed terror.

For a long moment, there was only static and the heavy sound of ragged breathing on the other end of the line. Then, a voice spoke—not Daniel’s, but a cold, unfamiliar rasp that sent ice straight down her spine.

“Nice car, Mrs. Vance,” the voice mocked softly. “Heading north, are we? Beautiful scenery up there. Too bad nobody will hear you scream when you run off the road.”

Claire’s breath hitched violently. She slammed her foot down harder on the accelerator, the engine roaring in protest. “Who is this? What do you want?”

“We don’t want anything from you, sweetheart,” the voice laughed darkly. “We just want Daniel to watch everything he loves burn to ash before we put a bullet in his head. And speaking of which... your husband sends his final regards.”

The line went dead with a sharp click. At that exact moment, the headlights of a heavy black SUV appeared in her rearview mirror, cresting the hill behind her at terrifying speed, its high beams blindingly bright as it accelerated directly toward her bumper.
