Chapter 10 - The Golden Stage

The applause was polite yet subdued as Victoria guided Luke’s motorized wheelchair onto the elevated wooden stage in the center of the grand ballroom. The flash of cameras flared continuously, capturing the solemn image of the crippled heir of the Sterling empire.

Marcus Vance stood at the podium, exuding the confident charisma of a seasoned corporate magnate. He raised his hands, silencing the murmurs of the elite crowd.

"Honored guests, board members, and friends of the Sterling family," Marcus began, his voice booming through the sound system. "Tonight marks a bittersweet milestone. On his thirty-fifth birthday, Luke Sterling has made the selfless, courageous decision to entrust the stewardship of Sterling Global to the Arthur Sterling Foundation, led by his devoted sister-in-law, Victoria."

Murmurs of approval rippled through the older board members. On the large projector screen behind the stage, the legal transfer documents were displayed, awaiting digital verification and Luke’s handwritten signature.

Victoria stepped to the podium, leaning gracefully over the microphone. "Luke’s journey this past year has been one of immense quiet suffering. But tonight, he chooses peace over corporate burdens. He chooses to let us carry the weight of Arthur’s great vision."

She walked back to Luke’s side, holding out a sleek silver fountain pen. Two private security guards in black suits stepped discreetly onto the flanks of the stage, blocking the stairways.

"Sign the documents, Luke," Victoria whispered softly, leaning down near his ear, her voice hardening beneath her radiant smile. "Do it for the family. Do it for the little girl waiting for you."

Luke looked at the silver pen in her hand. He did not reach for it. Instead, he looked past the sea of flashing cameras and met the gaze of Thomas Cole and Julian Vance standing at the back of the hall.

"No," Luke said.

The microphone pinned to his lapel carried the single syllable across the entire ballroom with startling resonance.

The murmurs died instantly. The room plunged into stunned, breathless silence.

Marcus stepped forward, maintaining a rigid smile. "Luke is understandably overwhelmed by emotion—"

"I said no," Luke repeated, his voice ringing out with iron clarity, devoid of the slightest tremor. "Because Arthur’s vision was never to hand his life’s work to the people who murdered him."
