Chapter 2 - The Scent of Betrayal

The private study smelled of aged leather, cedarwood, and old secrets. Outside, rain tapped relentlessly against the towering arched windows, casting ripples of shadow across Luke’s desk. Dr. Julian Vance set down his brass sampling kit, carefully sealing a glass vial containing remnants of the liquid Martha had scraped from the grand hall floor.
"How long have you been taking this, Luke?" Julian asked without looking up, his tone clinical yet laced with underlying dread.
"Fourteen months," Luke answered. His hands rested on the mahogany desk, unmoving, yet his fingers were coiled into tight, controlled fists. "Ever since the car crash that killed my brother, Arthur. Victoria took over my medical routine. She said Arthur made her promise to care for me."
Julian shook his head, holding the sample up to the desk lamp. "This isn't a rehabilitative neuro-enhancer. Even without a full lab workup, the chemical markers are unmistakable. It’s a derivative of synthetic conopeptide combined with heavy sedatives. In controlled micro-doses, it prevents neurological regeneration. It keeps motor pathways dormant. It paralyzes nerves without killing them."
Luke exhaled slowly, the breath rattling softly in his chest. "So my spine..."
"Was healing," Julian finished grimly. "Your body has been trying to rebuild nerve pathways for over a year. But every morning and every evening, she poisoned those synapses back into comatose stasis. She wasn't treating you. She was keeping you trapped in your own flesh."
A quiet sniffle broke the silence. Sitting on the leather settee with her knees pulled to her chest was Lily. She was the daughter of Luke's late estate groundskeeper, taken in by Luke after her father’s passing six months earlier. The house staff called her a shadow because she moved without sound, seeing everything and saying nothing—until today.
Luke turned his wheelchair toward her, his gaze softening completely. "Lily."
She looked up, her hazel eyes red-rimmed and fearful. "Am I going to be sent away now? Miss Victoria told me bad girls who tell lies end up on the streets."
Luke wheeled closer, extending his hand until it rested gently on her small shoulder. "You saved my life, Lily. As long as I draw breath, this house is your home. No one will ever harm you here."
Julian packed his instruments with deliberate precision. "She won't take this quietly, Luke. Victoria isn't acting alone. The Sterling family trust transfers complete control to Arthur’s designated heir or his surviving spouse upon your thirty-fifth birthday—which is three weeks away. If you're declared permanently incapacitated, Victoria, as Arthur’s legally recognized common-law partner, assumes full conservatorship."
"She wanted the fortune, and she wanted me alive just long enough to sign over the private assets," Luke murmured, staring down at his motionless legs beneath his tailored trousers.

"What do we do now?" Julian asked.
"Now," Luke whispered, a cold, focused spark returning to his gaze for the first time in over a year, "we let her believe the poison is still working."
