Chapter 9 - The Gathering Storm

The night of Luke Sterling’s thirty-fifth birthday arrived under a blanket of autumn fog. The Grand Metropolitan Ballroom was adorned in black tie opulence: crystal chandeliers cast shimmering light across gold-rimmed tables, while members of high society, international investors, and the press mingled over flutes of vintage champagne.
Behind the velvet curtain of the private holding suite, Luke sat in his high-tech motorized wheelchair. He wore a tailored black tuxedo, pristine and sharp, identical to the one his brother Arthur had worn to their last public foundation gala. His expression was calm, an impenetrable mask of quiet dignity.
Beside him, Julian checked the discreet earpiece hidden behind his collar. "Federal agents are positioned in the service corridors. Thomas has delivered the financial forensics to the District Attorney. They're waiting for our signal."
"Is Lily safe?" Luke asked, his voice steady.
"She’s at my family's private estate outside the county, guarded by state marshals," Julian assured him, placing a firm hand on Luke’s shoulder. "She made me promise to give you this before you went out there."
Julian pulled a small, folded piece of paper from his pocket. Luke unfolded it. In bright wax crayons, Lily had drawn a picture of a man standing tall beside a little girl, both smiling under a golden sun. At the bottom, written in uneven, childish lettering, were the words: Stand tall, Luke. You are free.
Luke’s eyes warmed with profound emotion. He carefully folded the drawing and tucked it inside the breast pocket of his tuxedo, right over his heart, beside Arthur’s leather ledger.
The heavy double doors of the suite opened. Victoria stepped inside, looking breathtaking in an off-the-shoulder emerald gown that shimmered like serpent scales. Her diamond necklace caught the light, and her smile was radiant with manufactured affection.

"It’s time, Luke," she purred, stepping behind his wheelchair to take hold of the handles. "The board is gathered. The press is waiting. Let us put an end to all this tedious uncertainty."
Luke looked straight ahead into the dressing mirror. "Yes, Victoria. Let us put an end to it."
