Chapter 14 - The Light in the Garden

Three days later, the autumn fog had cleared, giving way to a crisp, golden morning at the Sterling manor.
The front gates of the estate stood open, welcoming the fresh morning breeze that swept away the stagnant shadows of the past year. Inside the grand house, the atmosphere had transformed. Martha was humming softly as she opened the towering windows of the drawing room, letting the autumn sunlight pour across the polished hardwood floors.
In the private courtyard garden, where yellow and crimson leaves carpeted the stone paths, Luke walked slowly, leaning lightly on a polished dark oak cane. Beside him walked Julian, carrying two cups of steaming black coffee.
"Harrison has fully confessed," Julian noted, taking a sip. "He surrendered the encrypted logs of every chemical shipment Marcus purchased. Victoria’s legal team is attempting a plea bargain, but the prosecutor isn't budging. They are both looking at thirty years minimum."
Luke stopped near the marble fountain, leaning against his cane and looking up at the clear blue sky. "I don't care about their sentences, Julian. The hatred died the moment I stood up on that stage. Harboring bitterness now would only keep me in another kind of wheelchair."
Julian looked at his old friend with deep admiration. "You always were more like your father than Arthur was. Compassionate to a fault."
"Not a fault," Luke corrected gently, smiling. "A choice. The only choice that keeps us human."
A sudden sound of light, rapid footsteps broke the serenity of the garden.
Around the corner of the rose arbor, Lily came running, her pink knitted sweater bright against the falling leaves. Her laughter was light, unburdened by fear or the shadow of exile. In her small hands, she held a bouquet of wild yellow chrysanthemums she had gathered from the lower lawn.
"Luke! Luke, look!" she called out, skidding to a halt on the gravel path, her hazel eyes sparkling with absolute joy.
Luke didn't hesitate. He set his cane against the rim of the stone fountain and crouched down, opening his arms wide.
Lily ran directly into his embrace, wrapping her small arms tightly around his neck. The scent of sweet autumn air and pure innocence washed over him, washing away the lingering traces of conopeptide, fear, and sorrow.
"You're walking with a cane today!" Lily beamed, pulling back to inspect him with serious, critical eyes. "Soon you won't even need that stick."
"Soon," Luke agreed, his voice thick with genuine happiness. "And starting tomorrow, you and I have work to do."
"Work?" she asked, tilting her head.
May you like
"We are building a new foundation," Luke said, brushing a stray leaf from her hair. "A foundation to build homes and schools for children who need a safe place to grow. And you, Miss Evans, are going to be my chief advisor."
Lily’s face lit up with an enormous, radiant smile. "Deal!"
