Chapter 12 - Rising from the Dust

A collective, stunned gasp swept across the grand ballroom. The silence that followed was so profound that the hum of the crystal chandeliers could be heard.

Luke’s shoes pressed flat against the wooden floorboards of the stage.

His muscles trembled beneath his tailored black trousers, fighting against fourteen months of enforced dormancy. Veins rose along his neck. Sweat beaded at his temples. The physical memory of Julian’s grueling midnight sessions flooded his mind: Five seconds. Ten seconds. Stand tall.

Victoria stared at him, her eyes widening in sheer, unadulterated horror. She stumbled backward, her hand flying to her mouth as if she had witnessed the dead rising from an open grave. "No... it's impossible... the doses..."

With deliberate, agonizing grace, Luke straightened his back.

He rose.

First half an inch. Then an inch. His knees locked into place with unyielding resolve. His towering six-foot-two frame unfolded, casting a long, commanding shadow across the podium. He stood upright on his own two feet, tall, unbowed, and magnificent beneath the blazing stage lights.

Camera shutters fired in an unbroken, deafening roar of flashing strobe light. Guests stood up from their chairs in disbelief.

Marcus took two steps back, his face devoid of blood, his swagger collapsing into pathetic terror. "Secure the doors! Marcus, do something!" Victoria shrieked, clutching her brother's arm as federal agents surrounded the perimeter of the stage.

Luke took one slow, deliberate step forward.

The heavy thud of his leather shoe against the wooden stage echoed through the auditorium like a drumbeat of doom. He looked down at Victoria from his full height, his dark eyes burning with righteous fury.

"You took my brother," Luke said, his voice echoing across the ballroom without the aid of the podium mic. "You stole fourteen months of my life. You tried to exile an innocent child who saw through your malice. But you could not kill the truth."

He took a second step, closing the distance between them until he stood towering directly in front of the shaking woman.

"Your reign over this family ends tonight."
