Chapter 5 - The Line in the Sand

The library felt claustrophobic as the two transport agents stood near the doorway, their expressions impassive. The social caseworker, Ms. Gable, adjusted her horn-rimmed glasses, clearly uncomfortable beneath Luke Sterling's unyielding gaze.

"Mr. Sterling," Ms. Gable began, checking her paperwork, "as Miss Victoria is currently the primary legal guardian of the household while you are under medical care, she has the authority to assign Miss Lily Evans to a registered residential facility."

"Does she?" Luke’s voice was velvet smooth, yet loaded with authority. He looked at Victoria, who stood near the fireplace, sipping coffee from a porcelain cup, exuding absolute triumph.

"Darling, we've discussed this," Victoria sighed theatrically. "With your condition, the stress of raising a child with emotional trauma is hindering your neural recovery. It's an act of mercy for both of you."

"Show me the formal decree granting you guardianship of Lily Evans," Luke said calmly.

Victoria’s brow furrowed slightly. "Luke, the conservatorship over your estate automatically covers the dependents under your roof—"

"The conservatorship that has not yet taken legal effect?" Julian Vance's sharp voice cut through the room like a scalpel.

Julian stepped through the open French doors leading from the garden terrace, accompanied by a tall man in a charcoal suit carrying a briefcase: Thomas Cole, senior managing partner of Sterling Global’s legal division and Arthur’s most trusted attorney.

Victoria nearly dropped her cup. "Thomas? What is the meaning of this intrusion?"

"I was summoned by my client," Thomas Cole replied, placing his briefcase flat on the mahogany table. "Mr. Luke Sterling remains the sole surviving executor of the Sterling Estate until his thirty-fifth birthday or until a court-certified neurological evaluation declares him legally non compos mentis. That evaluation has not occurred."

"He is paralyzed and mentally impaired by trauma!" Victoria raised her voice, losing a fraction of her composure. "His own physician filed the preliminary disability reports!"

"You mean Dr. Harrison?" Julian took a step forward, producing an official court envelope. "The same Dr. Harrison who was arrested two hours ago at the international terminal attempting to board a flight to Zurich? The Dr. Harrison whose private lab contained liters of illicit synthetic conopeptide?"

The silence that followed was absolute. The transport agents exchanged glances and took half a step backward, toward the doorway.

Victoria’s breath caught in her throat. Her knuckles turned white against the mantle. "That... that is an absurd fabrication."

"The agents may leave," Luke said, looking at Ms. Gable. "Lily Evans remains here. As my ward. Forever."

Ms. Gable nodded rapidly, gathering her folders. "Of... of course, Mr. Sterling. We will halt the transfer pending official inquiry."

As the caseworkers hurried out, Victoria turned toward Luke, her eyes ablaze with naked fury. The masks were completely gone. "You think you've won something here, Luke? You can't even stand to look me in the eye. You are a prisoner in that chair, and you always will be."

Luke did not flinch. He simply stared at her with quiet pity. "We will see about that, Victoria."
