Chapter 1 - The First Bite

The polished sterling fork felt heavy, balanced awkwardly between Maya’s trembling, dirt-streaked fingers. The savory scent of warm glazed salmon and whipped potatoes curled into her hollow chest, making her stomach clench with desperate hunger. Across the pristine linen tablecloth, the woman in the black tailored suit—Victoria Vance—watched with an expression stripped clean of corporate pride. For Victoria, the bustling metropolitan restaurant with its whispered gossip and clinking crystal vanished completely. All that remained was the fragile child before her, whose gaunt collarbones peeked through the frayed neckline of a faded cotton shirt.
Maya took a tentative bite. The warmth of the food triggered an immediate rush of tears that she frantically tried to blink back. She had spent the last three nights curled beneath an abandoned loading dock, listening to rats scuttle across plastic tarps while rain pounded the concrete. To sit on velvet upholstery, chewing food seasoned with real butter, felt like entering a realm reserved for the dead. The waiter, standing rigidly a few feet away with a clean cloth napkin draped across his forearm, cleared his throat in quiet discomfort. High society dining rooms were not meant for street urchins, yet Victoria’s sharp, authoritative gaze pinned him to the parquet floor before he could speak a word of objection.
""Take your time, sweetheart,"" Victoria murmured, her voice steady but laced with a gentleness she rarely offered anyone in her boardroom. ""No one is going to take it away from you."" Maya swallowed hard, nodding rapidly. But as she reached for the silver water goblet, a sudden gust from the restaurant’s opened front entryway made her flinch. A tall man in a dark trench coat had stepped into the foyer, his cold eyes scanning the dining floor with mechanical precision, locking directly onto Maya’s back.
