Chapter 2 - The Watcher in the Rain

Maya’s fork dropped onto the china plate with a sharp clatter that silenced the nearest patrons. Victoria noticed the girl’s knuckles instantly turn stark white against her threadbare knees. The warm glow in Maya’s dark eyes evaporated, replaced by raw, primal terror. Following the child's frozen gaze, Victoria turned toward the entrance. Through the cut-glass partition, the silhouette lingered under the canopy light, water dripping from the brim of an understated wool cap. The man did not look like a diner seeking refuge from the storm; his stance was rigid, his attention anchored entirely on the trembling child beside Victoria.
""Maya, do you know him?"" Victoria asked, leaning forward across the table, her tone shifting instantly into defensive vigilance. Maya didn't answer with words. She merely shrank deeper into the high velvet backrest, pulling her small knees upward toward her ribs as if trying to fold into absolute nothingness. The tuxedoed waiter noticed the tension and stepped forward to offer the dessert menu, oblivious to the silent alarm unraveling at table twelve. Victoria raised her palm, cutting him off without looking up. Her instincts, honed through decades of cutthroat corporate survival, told her this was no ordinary runaway case.
Victoria slid her smartphone into her blazer pocket, stood up smoothly, and dropped several hundred-dollar bills onto the tablecloth without checking the bill. She reached down, wrapping her warm cashmere wrap around Maya’s shivering shoulders. The fabric swallowed the girl whole, smelling faintly of jasmine and cedarwood. Victoria took Maya’s small, icy hand into her own. ""We’re leaving through the kitchen,"" Victoria whispered firmly. But as they turned toward the back corridor, the man outside bypassed the host stand entirely, shoving the maître d' aside with terrifying force.
