Chapter 9 - The Breakout

The words hit the humid basement air like a detonated charge. Julian’s polished facade cracked, his jaw tightening as his finger took up the slack on the trigger. ""Quiet, you little sewer rat—"" Before Julian could finish the sentence, Victoria hurled the heavy brass letter opener she had slipped into her sleeve directly at his face. The metal struck his cheekbone with a wet crunch. Julian cried out in pain and shock, his weapon discharging wildly into the concrete floor, sending a ricocheting spark bouncing against the boiler pipes.

Taking immediate advantage of the disruption, Victoria grabbed an industrial fire extinguisher mounted to the adjacent column, twisting the pin and discharging a massive cloud of blinding white chemical powder directly into Julian’s face. He choked, stumbling backward while firing blindly into the haze. Victoria grabbed Maya by the wrist and sprinted toward the service alley exit. The heavy steel door banged open, spilling them into the drenched alleyway just as the city sirens began to howl in the distance, echoing off the towering skyscrapers.

They hit the rain-soaked pavement at a full run. The city was cold, uncaring, and vast, but for the first time in her insulated life, Victoria felt alive with a ferocious, primal purpose. She wasn't just surviving a corporate coup; she was running to protect the only living remnant of an innocent woman murdered by her own family's greed. Behind them, through the white fog of the fire extinguisher, the heavy sound of approaching mercenaries signaled that Julian had called for immediate reinforcement.
