Chapter 13 - The Breach at Terminal 44

The midnight tide slapped aggressively against the concrete pilings of Terminal 44. A dense ocean fog blanketed the shipping yard, turning the towering stacks of colorful freight containers into surreal, monolithic mazes. Julian Vance stood under the sodium lights of the loading crane, checking his gold wristwatch while four armed security guards patrolled the perimeter. The Panamanian freighter groaned against its mooring lines, its engines idling with a low, sub-audible vibration that rattled the dock planks. Behind Julian, a refrigerated steel container sat on a flatbed trailer, silent except for the faint, desperate shifting of frightened children trapped inside.
Suddenly, the yard's primary security floodlights snapped off with an audible pop. A piercing siren began to wail across the harbor as Miller’s modified tugboat rammed the facility’s auxiliary power substation at full throttle, severing the yard's commercial lines. In the ensuing confusion, Victoria and Maya moved like ghosts through the container shadows. Victoria held a flare gun in her right hand, her left clutching a portable transmitter broadcasting Elena's encrypted files directly into the open maritime distress frequency used by the Coast Guard and international shipping vessels.
Julian drew his pistol, shouting curses into his radio as his guards panicked in the sudden darkness. ""Secure the container! Move it onto the deck now!"" he screamed. But as the crane operator reached for his controls, a bright crimson flare arched across the foggy sky, exploding directly against the cab window in a burst of blinding phosphorus. The crane operator fell back, dropping the hoist cables onto the empty dock. Through the smoke and flickering red light, Victoria stepped into the open courtyard, holding the transmitter high above her head.
