Chapter 7 - The Hidden Passage

Victoria didn't hesitate. She severed the call and turned to the wood-paneled wall behind the study desk. Her late husband, an excessively paranoid man during his final years of corporate scandal, had insisted on installing a secondary escape route connecting the penthouse directly to the freight elevator shaft. She pressed the concealed pressure plate hidden within the ornate molding. The panel clicked softly and slid inward, revealing an unlit service stairwell coated in dust. She nudged Maya inside first, following close behind and pulling the wooden facade back into its locked frame just as heavy boots kicked the study door open.
They crept down the narrow metal staircase in complete darkness, guided only by Victoria’s hand tracing the cold cinderblock wall. Above them, muffled shouts and the sound of splintering mahogany confirmed that the intruders had breached the inner sanctum. Maya didn't cry or whimper; the child moved with an eerie, heartbreaking familiarity with flight and evasion. ""We have to go to ground,"" Victoria thought, realizing that her wealth and resources were compromised from the top down. Whoever hired these men had access to her private schedules, her security codes, and her home address.
They emerged into the damp utility basement three floors below ground level. Old boiler pipes hissed steam into the dim, yellow-lit corridor. Victoria led Maya toward the loading dock, intending to steal an unmarked maintenance van. But as they rounded the corner past the electrical breakers, a figure stepped out from behind a concrete pillar, cutting off their path. It was not a mercenary in tactical gear; it was Julian Vance, Victoria’s brother-in-law and the vice-chairman of Vance Global, holding a silenced pistol aimed straight at Maya’s chest.
